Interview: Sumo and Dumpling

Pets, they’re your best friend and confidant. Big or small, fluffy or a bit scruffy, it doesn’t matter, we love them all. They’re there for you unconditionally and the feeling is mutual. Our interview series celebrates this special bond between animals and hoomans. Let the awws begin.

Hoomans: Jesse (works in video games) and Jin (a financial analyst)

Doggos: Sumo (5 years old) and Dumpling (4 years old)

Home: Singapore

We named our dogs after Asian themes: Sumo (Chow Chow Poodle Mix) sounded fat like him, and Dumpling (English Bulldog) to continue the theme and because he was originally called Ba Zhang (a type of glutinous rice dumpling).

Sumo is basically a teddy bear. That said, he’s also naughty, demanding, and very smart (only when there is food; otherwise he’s very stupid). When you throw a ball high in the air, Sumo will not look up and will instead look down, which is either really smart or really stupid (what goes up must come down, right?).

Speaking of food, the funniest thing Sumo did was when he ate something bad and really needed to poo outside of his scheduled hours. He needed to go so badly that he decided to go to a corner, face the corner, and poo on the floor. He thought he was being sneaky because he couldn't us, but we all saw him.

These two are an endless source of entertainment.

Dumpling has the squishiest cheeks ever, loves cuddles, and human affection. He’s boisterous and does things without thinking. One time he tried to attack a gigantic Mastiff and in the process broke his leash and forgot he was only 1/4th of its size. Also, once he didn't understand what water and a pool was and Jin (dad) threw a ball into the middle of the pool, so Dumpling jumped as high as he could and splonked into the water. Even though he was wearing a floatie and was quickly rescued by Daddy, he still refused to go near water, which is sad because we paid for a one hour session in the pool!

Their typical day goes like this: Wake up at 7am, wait impatiently for food and stare at the door until someone walks them. Nap and dream of dinner. Treats. Maybe tummy rubs. Go for an afternoon walk, but it's very hot and humid (it’s Singapore!) and Dumpling gets tired after 15 minutes. Eat dinner, stare at the door longingly, cuddle mom or dad, sleep and dream of breakfast. It’s a good life and they are close to us during difficult times and love us unconditionally.

Ps. They both have very smelly farts and Dumpling smells like garbage (even though he is regularly showered and his jowls are cleaned daily)!
