Interview: Freddie Meowcury
Pets, they’re your best friend and confidant. Big or small, fluffy or a bit scruffy, it doesn’t matter, we love them all. They’re there for you unconditionally and the feeling is mutual. Our interview series celebrates this special bond between animals and hoomans. Let the awws begin.
Hooman: Mac Watson, a LA-based, Canadian writer, actor, producer
Cat: Freddie Meowcury (1 year old) aka Gurl and Gurly
Home: Los Angeles, California
I had been fostering various cats through an organisation that specifically helps special needs cats. The lady who ran it reached out to me and as one of her go-to fosters, asked if I’d take a tiny 8 week old tortie kitten with a cleft palate for a couple weeks. Needless to say, it was an immediate foster fail.
I really, really like glam rock and my other cat is named Ziggy Stardust for David Bowie. So I thought it’d be cool to have a Bowie cat and a Freddie Mercury cat, because together they would be “Under Pressure.”
Freddie’s a tiny cat with a huge personality and attitude. She’s a total diva. She lived up to her name in a big way. I love her feisty attitude and fierce independence. She’s also extremely vocal, chatting and screaming and letting you know exactly how she feels at all times. Very dramatic. She has her sweet moments too, when she gives lots of kisses. When she does cuddle, I never want to move again. Usually she moves away first, sigh.
She’s slightly aggressive, which is both funny and worrisome. She murdered a lizard once. And once she punched my boyfriend in the face when he tried to cuddle her too long and his nose gushed blood.
A day for her is like: Wake up human for food way too early. Sleep. Look outside the window and hunt birds and mice from inside. Eat. Sleep more. Go outside on my leash if I’m lucky. Play with my fave wire toy or mouse. Sleep. Hit human for no reason. Try to dart outside into the hallway when a human comes home. Plop directly on the human's bladder in the middle of the night and the cycle starts again.
She was model scouted through Instagram and got a paid modelling job modelling for a brand called Litterbox.com. Seriously. Check out her cute (flat) face on their website, modelling for cool toys and comfy beds. After that gig, she scored a gig with a major pet food brand (cough Hill’s Science Diet, cough) where she would’ve been on a bag of kibble! But diva antics proved too difficult to work with – she growled at all the professional animal wranglers on the training day – and was essentially fired from the gig for her attitude. She’s like the cat version of Naomi Campbell.
