Interview: Penny (nee Tonks)

SPECIAL INTERVIEW: Questions with a foster pawrent. Foster pawrents play a crucial part in a rescued animal’s life. Sometimes they turn into furever pawrents, sometimes they’re just there for those key first moments of a rescued live. Today we speak with Marlee to learn about her experience with Penny (formerly known as Tonks).

Foster hooman: Marlee, PhD student in Roman art and archaeology

Doggo: Rescued as Tonks –renamed Penny Penguin (almost 3 years old) by new owners

Home: Manhattan, New York City

Tonks (yes, from Harry Potter) was rescued from a Texas shelter by Muddy Paws Rescue NYC when she was about 8 months old. She (Terrier Mix) had already had a litter of puppies but was neutered by the rescue just before she went to her foster (me! See first photo).

She was fostered for a week in NYC before being adopted by her furever parents. She was a great first foster and won over her new parents at first sight. This April 21 was her official 2 year adoption anniversary. When I saw her parents signing the adoption forms, I cried like a baby in the middle of Petco. She is now renamed Penny Penguin.

This is the update I sent to the rescue as her bio: “Tonks is a calm and gentle little lady, who wants to be near her human all the time. Every time you walk into the room, Tonks is there wagging her tail. She loves belly rubs and head scratches.

She sleeps through the night in her crate and loves naps during the day, but is always ready to explore on a walk.

Always alert but also a little reserved, runners and birds often catch her eye. Impressively, she does not eat anything off the sidewalk and is fully housebroken, no accidents!

Tonks has not shown a great interest in toys, and we have not tried the subway. People are her favourite. She is very welcoming and takes pets and scratches from anyone. She has no problems being handled and will let you wipe her paws after coming in from the rain.

Tonks has quickly made herself at home and comfortable and trusting with her foster mom. Any human would be lucky to have Tonks as their forever dog!”
