Interview: Romana

Pets, they’re your best friend and confidant. Big or small, fluffy or a bit scruffy, it doesn’t matter, we love them all. They’re there for you unconditionally and the feeling is mutual. Our interview series celebrates this special bond between animals and hoomans. Let the awws begin.

Hooman: Jordana, a corporate attorney living in Veracruz, a place surrounded by the sea.

Doggo: Romana (1 year old) aka Romanoff, Romanovzky, Roma, Ro, Romanoide (like a humanoid)

Home: Veracruz, Mexico

One morning I found her browsing Facebook. It was a page where they were looking for adoptive parents, so I got out of bed and went to "meet her." There, they told me that they had been observing her for a long time and that she lived on the street and hid under the cars.

One of my favourite artists had just released his album and one of his songs says: “The Romana lit better than Dubai. You are a bandit, you bring them to them, hey. If I tell her to come, it falls. Hopefully, I hope you're my girl tonight.” And I gave her that name because it fit her personality. Since day one, I could see she was very happy and energetic. Like THE ROMANA!

Romana is very playful all the time and very active and attentive to you. I love her expressive gaze and that she is always happy. However, she is also very suspicious and afraid of what she does not know.

She wakes up at 8-9 AM, goes out to the garden to pee, accompanies me to clean her poop, has breakfast, goes to see the sky and the birds and then she tries to hunt them, plays with my niece most of the day and later she goes out with my parents or with me for her daily walk. Romana is very special, she is not the typical puppy who only wants to be petted. In fact, she’s somewhat detached from physical contact, she only comes close to you if she wants to be petted but if not, she leaves and looks at you strangely, like saying: “Why are you touching me?”

She does have her funny moments. Once, she threw herself into the pool because she thought my mother was drowning, but ended up falling on top of her! She’s also very independent, and sometimes opens the doors and leaves home for a walk, all by herself! That can be worrisome.

Since bringing Romana home, my life has changed incredibly for good. When I found her, I was going through difficult times in my life, I had just been diagnosed with severe depression and I didn't feel like anything. She became the reason for me to get out of bed, and I smile every time I watch her do something funny. She has not only brought joy to me, but to my whole family. She has filled my house with laughter.
