Interview: Qtip and Butters
Pets, they’re your best friend and confidant. Big or small, fluffy or a bit scruffy, it doesn’t matter, we love them all. They’re there for you unconditionally and the feeling is mutual. Our interview series celebrates this special bond between animals and hoomans. Let the awws begin.
Hooman: Dale and Jessica
Doggos: Qtip (7 years old) and Butters (6 years old)
Home: Toronto, Canada
Qtip (Pomeranian, white) was my first real pet ever, aside from my pet turtle back in 5th grade. We were picking between a rabbit or dog and found her on Kijiji. She was shipped over from Korea. We were told she was going to be a teacup size pom, but she turned out looking like a chubby chicken (that’s one of her nicknames). We love her nonetheless! When it came to naming her, we were debating between Mochi, Kimchi or Qtip. We chose Qtip in the end so we could call her “QT (cutie)”, but most people think we named her after the rapper.
We knew we wanted to find Qtip a companion one day, but we weren’t actively looking. We stumbled upon Butters (Pomeranian, tan) and his litter of siblings on Kijiji. Thought to ourselves, “Hey, there’s no harm in visiting, we’ll just have a look”. Of course, we didn’t leave without him. (Yes, he’s named after Butters from South Park).
We found him in the backyard of a home in North York, fighting for food with his siblings. He was the largest of the litter, so we thought he would be the alpha dog. But turns out to be a total wimp who’s scared of everything, even floating plastic bags! We found him in the bathroom shaking one night. First thing that came to my mind was, he must be sick or hurt. Checked everywhere, nothing was wrong with him. Then I heard a buzzing sound. A fly was trapped in our home! After the fly was gone, Butter’s immediately stopped shivering and went back to his normal self. Flies are one of his many many fears!
Personality wise, they’re quite different. Qtip is quiet. Thinks she’s human. Sleeping is always a priority. Hates walks. She hates going on walks unless it’s a beautiful, sunny day. Needs to be hand fed. Will do anything for treats! Once we left a spam and egg sandwich inside a lunch bag on the dining table. Came home a few hours later, found her on the dining table with the paper bag stuck on her head. Spam and egg sandwich was nowhere to be found. Luckily she didn’t get sick from eating it!
Qtip also loves to get Butters in trouble by triggering Butters to bark. Will also do anything for attention from guys and guys only.
Butters loves to bark. Very clingy and has major separation anxiety. Silly and innocent. Pees at least five times on every walk and on every tree. Only likes to play with chihuahua size dogs. He barks all day at anything.
Since having them in our lives, we’re always having to plan around their schedules. I definitely become a more responsible adult now. It’s worth it because they’re always excited to see us, loves us unconditionally, even when I have no makeup on!
